SIGNIFICANCE
Effects of the Cuban Missile Crisis
Overall, the end results of the Cuban Missile Crisis could've turned out a lot worse than they did.
For a start, no ensuing nuclear war resulted right after, thanks to JFK and his containment policy helping to prevent that even when a lot of people around Kennedy would've chosen to invade Cuba. Had Kennedy chosen that path, the effects would've played out much differently. The U.S. responded to the Cuban Missile Crisis by forming a blockade around Cuba to ensure that no more nukes could be brought to Cuba without notice. However, this was not attacking anyone or creating bigger problems; it simply was a defensive military action to help contain the Soviet nukes. But what the Cuban Missile Crisis really caused was a sort of wake up call. It brought attention to the world how close nuclear war really was to happening. This not only scared citizens around the world, but also world leaders. As a result, changes came about.
47 years after the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty, and 55 years after the Cuban Missile Crisis we are still here. The Cold War between the United States and Soviet Union has ended and relations today between the U.S. and Russia are holding up at the moment. The Cuban Missile Crisis made the world seriously consider the harsh effects of the nuclear bomb. Because after all, the world almost saw it in action. Had Kennedy chosen to invade Cuba and not go with the diplomatic policy of containment, we might not be here today. |
